    Jackrabbits win season opener

BROOKINGS - Anthony Watson provided the crew operating Coughlin-Alumni Stadium's new scoreboard system with plenty of highlights to work out the kinks in their flashy production.

Watson took the game's opening handoff for a 55-yard score, finishing with 183 yards and three touchdowns for South Dakota State in its season-opening 42-13 victory over Wisconsin-LaCrosse on Saturday night.

In front of the razzle and dazzle of the massive Daktronics video board and 5,737 fans, the Jackrabbits owned their home turf. SDSU rushers combined for 357 ground yards, often bursting through crater-sized holes blown open by the offensive line.

"If we can run the ball like that every game, I'd be the happiest guy on earth," SDSU coach John Stiegelmeier said. "That is so demoralizing for a defense."

Typically a stronger second-half runner, Watson got off to a stylish start to the season Saturday.

Taking the handoff from quarterback Andy Kardoes, the All-Great West Conference first-teamer zipped through a massive hole carved out by linemen Paul Keizer and Mitch Erickson, then turned up the right sideline. When it looked as if he was stopped, Watson spun away from one Eagles defender, then slipped two other tackles as he reversed field and headed to the end zone just 22 seconds into the game.

"You've got to give it up to the offensive line," said Watson, a junior who needed just 15 carries in three quarters of work to do his damage. "It was complete dominance, and that first run set the tone for the whole game. I haven't been part of a line like that for a long time."

With 4:37 to play in the opening quarter, after a Wisconsin-LaCrosse punt, the Jacks coughed up their lead. Eagles defensive end Jeff Kratcha stripped SDSU running back Cory Koenig of the ball, and cornerback Steve Teeples snatched the ball out of midair and dashed 32 yards untouched for the TD. Ryan Corneiller's kick knotted the score at 7-7.

But SDSU answered on the following drive, set up at midfield after a 46-yard kickoff return by redshirt freshman JaRon Harris. Eight plays later, Watson skied over the pile and goal line from the 1, landing ball-first on the grass and tucking into a celebratory roll.

Watson was virtually unstoppable in the first half, finishing with 112 yards on 10 carries despite alternating with Koenig.

"I always tell the line that I just need a seam, and they give me tunnels," Watson said.

Kardoes, the junior who took over at quarterback, threw his second career touchdown late in the half, a 4-yard strike to tight end Chris Wagner that split double-coverage to send SDSU into halftime ahead 21-7.

LaCrosse inched back into the game early in the second half, as Cody Jenson pulled in a 21-yard scoring pass from quarterback John Schumann.

Any Eagles momentum proved short-lived, as Watson again pounded their defense on the next drive. Carrying the ball on all five plays, Watson barreled 71 yards, finishing it off with another scintillating score from 30 yards away before heading to the sidelines for good.

"Watson's just a unique runner - he can make you miss or he can run through you," Stiegelmeier said. "He's a phenomenal talent."

Koenig, who finished with 93 yards on 14 carries, added a 25-yard score late in the third quarter.

SDSU's defense held the Eagles to just 52 yards rushing for the game, despite yielding 338 through the air.

Harris, a former sprinter from Washington High who played just one year of high school football, scored on a 50-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Reed Burckhardt late in the game. It was Harris' first career reception.

Re: Argus story "Jacks win season opener"

The print verison of the Sunday Argus gave  USD a little more coverage than the SDSU game.  I suspect that since the USD game was an afternoon game and in Vermillion might have had an affect in the amount of ink used. I dont think they were intentionally slighting SDSU. Oh well lets see next week how coverage is handled.

      Jackrabbits teach Eagles tough lessons

BROOKINGS, S.D. — Just as UW-La Crosse football coach Larry Terry had hoped, his team's game against South Dakota State University was a learning experience.

Of course, Terry was hoping for a win to go along with it, but that didn't come close to happening. The NCAA Division I-AA Jackrabbits ran past the Eagles 42-13 in front of 5,737 people at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium on Saturday.

"Now we've got to get better between our first and second game," Terry said. "And I think we will improve. I think the guys played hard and kept their pride."

Above all else, the Eagles learned that they don't want to see any more of SDSU junior tailback Anthony Watson, who rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns. The Jackrabbits gouged UW-L's defense for 357 yards on the ground.

Watson, 5-foot-10, 220 pounds, rushed for 1,088 yards last season and was named first-team All-Great West Football Conference. The shifty, hard-charging Watson ran for 55 yards and a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and barely slowed down.

"It meant a lot in this game and it meant a lot for our season," Watson said of the early touchdown. "Last year, we got off to a slow start and what we needed was a fast start. That's a good football team there and we didn't take them lightly."

Eagles cornerback Steve Teeples, who scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery and had an interception, wasn't pleased with the 505 total yards the defense gave up. Like Terry, he's expecting improvement next week.

"We knew coming in that this was a good ballclub," Teeples said. "This isn't what we expected to do, but we'll live with it. We've got to get past this."

The bright spot for UW-L was its passing game, which produced 338 yards. Junior John Schumann, making his first regular-season start, completed 15 of 22 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, senior Steve Tennies saw plenty of time-as Terry said he would-and was 10-for-14 for 96 yards. He was charged with an interception, but it was a pass that went off the hands of Eric Donoval.

"We've got to be more consistent," Schumann said. "There are times that we moved the ball great and then we'd get ourselves into third-and-long. We have to execute better in the red zone. We've got to punch it in."

The Jackrabbits needed just 22 seconds — two touches of the ball — to score. Josh Davis returned the opening kickoff 30 yards and Watson added the next 55 yards with his touchdown run.

UW-L dampened the momentum of that quick strike with a 12-play drive that took seven minutes off the clock before stalling at SDSU's 29-yard line.

The Eagles evened the game with 4:37 left in the first quarter with a defensive touchdown.

Reserve tailback Cory Koenig met immediate resistance on a play up the middle from his own 26, and as he tried to spin away, defensive end Jeff Kratcha punched the ball out of Koenig's grip. The ball popped into the air, and Teeples snatched it up and ran in for a touchdown to tie it 7-7.

The Jackrabbits used their special teams and a heavy dose of Watson to take a 21-7 lead.

After UW-L's touchdown, JaRon Harris returned the kickoff 46 yards. Watson took care of 41 of the 50 remaining yards, including a 1-yard touchdown dive.

SDSU's next touchdown was set up by a partially-blocked punt. The Jackrabbits got the ball at the Eagles' 35 and converted five plays later on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Andy Kardoes to Chris Wagner to make it 21-7.

Teeples' interception set up a UW-L touchdown midway through the third quarter.

Schumann hit Cody Jenson on a deep slant route in the end zone. The extra point kick by Ryan Corneiller failed to keep the score 21-13.

The Jackrabbits made sure it didn't get any closer and put the game away in the third quarter on touchdown runs by Watson (30 yards) and Koenig (25) to make it 34-13.

UW-L's desperation comeback hopes were dealt a final blow after Schumann hooked up with Paul Killoren for a deep pass play, but Killoren coughed the ball up after running untouched for 69 yards.

SDSU scored in the fourth on a 50-yard pass from Reed Burckhardt to Harris, pushing its lead to 42-13.

INJURY REPORT: Right tackle Randy Gyllin suffered a foot/ankle injury and remained in Brookings overnight to get X-rays. Wide receiver Eric Kettenhofen has a sprained knee and is questionable for next week. Left tackle Dave Jacobson has a sprained ankle and is probable. Cornerback Brad Peterson suffered a shoulder injury and is questionable.
