    Area college capsules

    Article Published: 10/22/05

    Missouri-Rolla (5-2) at South Dakota State (3-3)

    WHEN/WHERE: 2 p.m. today, Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in Brookings

    RADIO: WNAX-AM 570

COACHES: SDSU: John Stiegelmeier (ninth year, 51-41); UM-R: Kirby Cannon (11-61).

RANKINGS: Neither team is ranked in their respective division's polls.

SERIES: SDSU leads 1-0, having defeated the Miners 49-0 in 1952.

LAST WEEK: The Jackrabbits, after defeating Cal Davis 16-14 on Oct. 8, used the bye week to heal some injuries. The Miners, a Division II independent in football, snapped a two-game losing skid with a 20-9 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State.

ABOUT SDSU: A much-needed week off provided QB Andy Kardoes a chance to rest his gimpy ankle. The junior, who scored the Jacks' lone touchdown against Cal Davis, is expected to start today's Hobo Day game. OG Paul Keizer is expected to return after missing the Oct. 8 game with an ankle injury.

The Jackrabbit offense could use a boost after playing four straight games against tough I-AA defenses. Kardoes is passing for just 112.3 yards per game, and SDSU is averaging just 15.3 points in its last four games.

RB Cory Koenig had his third straight 100-plus yard effort against the Aggies, a career-best 141 yards on 20 carries, and is averaging 93.3 yards a game. He's fourth in the Great West ahead of teammate Anthony Watson's 69.2 yard-per-game average, pacing SDSU's Great West-best 196.7 yard-per-game rushing average.

K Parker Douglass, the reigning Great West special teams player of the week, leads the conference in scoring with 9.4 points per game. He's 10-of-16 on field-goal tries and 17-of-17 on extra points.

Defensively, the Jacks hope to improve on a pass rush that has just nine sacks so far this season. True freshman DE Hank Goff leads with three sacks.

SDSU yields 327.8 yards to its opponents, but still only allows 17.7 points a game. The defense has given up more than 20 points only twice this season.

The bye week should also help the Jackrabbits refocus after the thrilling Great West win over Davis that keeps SDSU's conference title hopes alive.

ABOUT MISSOURI-ROLLA: The Miners are off to their best start since 1984, thanks in large part to the 10th-best passing offense in Division II.

QB Evan Gray, a three-year starter, has thrown for 1,845 yards and 17 touchdowns to just five interceptions this season. Gray has spread the ball around to 11 different receivers, with three boasting 40-plus catches apiece.

SDSU has allowed 192 yards a game through the air.

UM-R rode its ground game to last week's victory, getting 142 yards on 31 carries from RB Keenan Miller. The Miners average 129.7 yards on the ground and 393.3 yards of total offense a game.

Rolla's defense has allowed 163.3 yards rushing per game and 189.6 yards through the air, picking off 13 passes in the process. LB Mario Gant has a team-best 76 tackles, while DT Clarence Chaney has four of the Miners' 18 sacks.
