    Langer will pop a bottle

    BY ERIC X. VICCARO
Well, the champagne bottles haven't been popped yet.
    And it's almost December.
The Miami Dolphins' 1972 team will usually open some fine tasting bubbly every time the last undefeated team loses.
It serves as a reminder that the Dolphins are the only team in National Football League history to have a perfect season. Miami went 17-0.
South Dakota State University has a connection with that Miami team. His name is Jim Langer.
Talk about a man with a rich past.
Langer, one of the finest centers ever to play the game, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He made the Hall his first time on the nomination ballot back in 1987.
One year later, Langer was enshrined in the Jackrabbit Hall of Fame. He was the 24th such member inducted. It was one of the occassions in which the 25-year waiting period was waived.  .  .  .

Today, the Indianapolis Colts sit at 11-0. The Colts need to win eight more games to have the same level of perfection the Dolphins did. And maybe Colts' center Jeff Saturday will be able to share the same claim to fame as Langer.  .  .  .

The sports editor rarely makes predictions for print. But, he'll make one here.
Mr. Langer, prepare to uncork a bottle of champagne near you. The Colts won't be perfect.
And the Dolphins, from kicker Garo Yepremian to defensive end Vern Den Herder and running back Jim Kiick to middle linebacker Nick Buoniconti, will be right there with you to celebrate Jim.

    Go State!  ;D
