  • Vinny to the Colts

    from ESPN.com

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2378824

In a move fraught with irony on any number of fronts, the most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history is about to be replaced by one of the most clutch placement specialists in the game.

Unrestricted free agent Adam Vinatieri, who provided the winning field goals in two of the New England Patriots' three Super Bowl victories, has reached a contract agreement in principle with the Indianapolis Colts, ESPN.com has learned.

Complete terms of the contract were not immediately available, but league sources told ESPN.com that the multiyear deal includes a signing bonus of $3.5 million and that it averages $2.5 million over the first three years of the contract.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Adam Vinatieri arrived in Indianapolis with the usual expectations: kicking game-winners and winning championships.

After spending the past five years helping the New England Patriots win three Super Bowl titles, Vinatieri wants to do the same with the Colts.

"Hopefully many of those kicks are still with me," he said Thursday after he was introduced as the Colts' new kicker. "But those kicks are in the rearview mirror now, and I'm looking through the windshield."

$30,000 for new video equipment = tax write-off for a certain kicker looking for a good tax write-off. Hmmm.

How about Adam Vinatieri Field House/Locker Rooms & Indoor practice facility at Coughlin-Alumin Stadium?  Has a nice ring doesn't it?  I am just trying to help Adam out with his impending tax issues.

              Re: Vinny to the Colts

I hope Vinny has as a good  financial advisor. Easy money by athletes is often eyed and stolen with out the guy figuring out what happen. There have been too many heart breaking stories of guys not worrying about the money they make.

Some though seem to have figured out how important it is to have good management of those big dollars. I.E Skinny Miller.

Vinny probably already has an adsivor and I hope Vinny does give something back to SDSU, but he really is no different than anyother alum. He has to make the decision and write the check.

When he does give, I hope the SDSU Foundation will give him a  bushel of free certificates for SDSU ice cream.
Anything else he wants should be his.

I only got three certificates the last time I stopped by the foundation. I did though get a gift certificate for a gallon of ice cream.

                Re: Vinny to the Colts

Why is it that we don't see our current or former NFL'ers returning to Brookings all that often?

I wonder if this goes hand in hand with money that they have or haven't donated?

What I am getting at is could there be some bad feelings lingering that involves SDSU with these guys? I don't know and I am not trying to hint at anything but I do wonder why there hasn't been anything major come out of these players either returning to help raise money or writing checks?

                  Re: Vinny to the Colts

Not sure I can answer this question fully, but I can tell you that all of our NFL guys (Connot, Heiden, Timmerman, and Vinatieri)  signed iteams (Football helmets, shirts, etc.) for the Stan Marshall Auction last spring.  I bid and won a SDSU helmet signed by SDSU's all time leading rusher and CFL all star Josh Ranek. It sits proudly in my office.  So they do give back, to what degree .  .  . that I can't answer.

                    Re: Vinny to the Colts

I haven't had the pleasure of attending a Stan Marshall yet so I wasn't aware of that.

I am talking on a bit larger scale though. How many times during college games have we seen players on their bye weeks on the sidelines of their former college. Maybe the big 4 could be invited to attend a game and re-live the excitement of being on the sidelines again at Coughlin. Maybe that would help them open up a bit.

i wonder what vinny would think of parker douglass and his awesome field goal kicking skills. it would be a good discussion between those two and just think douglass has 2 years to shatter more records i dare say that he could be bigger than vinateri.

                        Re: Vinny to the Colts

Even starting an speculation as to what extent (excluding Stan Marshall items) the NFL alums give back is a very touchy subject that I for one feel should be left off of this board. No one on here has any concrete knowledge as to any giving that may have taken place or that could be planned, or of reason why such hasn't taken place. To each his own when it comes to giving. I know we all wish that those with deep pocket books would give back in some very generous way, shape or form.

I know no one has started any speculation, but this topic has turned to one that could hint of flying rumors that we have all been told on numerous occasions to avoid.

Just my thoughts on the manner.

Congrats to Vinny though, he's certainly worked hard for everything he's achieved.

Bigger than Vinny on a collegiate or NFL level? He's definately got a great opportunity to re-write SDSU's recordbooks. Vinny had that little something extra that's gotten him to where he's at today. I don't know Parker Douglas from a hole in the wall so I for one couldn't make any comparison between the two.

                            Re: Vinny to the Colts

JH - what I am trying to point out is not how much these guys have given but what is being done to "massage" them in to giving.

I visited a Nebraska game a few years back when Scott Frost had just graduated and was with the Jets. At one break in the game the PA announcer recognized Scott publicly with a camera on him. He waved to the crowd and everyone went nuts for him. This has got to make a guy feel good and remember where he came from and what fun he had there.

This would also help him be possibly more free with some money when it came time to ask.

BTW I would love to be there if Parker and Vinny spent an afternoon together kicking. That would be quite cool. I don't know if Parker will be better than Vinny in the end but one thing is for sure. Parker will have had more exposure than Vinny by the time he graduates.

I would pay to see Adam V. and Parker do some kicking at CAS.

As for what the players give back, the football program and the ACE club are always active in "massaging" the former athletes, regardless of their perceived or real success.
