    Chapman won’t be in Bison backfield

    North Dakota State’s 1-2 punch lost its deuce.

    Bison head football coach Craig Bohl said running back Cinque Chapman was declared academically ineligible and will miss the 2006 season.

    Chapman and starting running back Kyle Steffes formed one of the top tailback combinations in Division I-AA in 2004. But injuries to Chapman hindered his carries last season, leaving Steffes with the majority of the work.

    That will not change next year. Bohl said summer school will not help Chapman’s standing, and he was not sure if the junior from Chicago will return to the team in two years.  .  .  .

    Bohl also said backup cornerback Jimmie Johnson is academically ineligible to play this fall.

    Johnson, a junior college transfer from Phoenix Community College, was originally signed for the 2005 season but was academically ineligible. He did enroll in spring semester and played spring football.

    “Jimmie showed some promise, but he wasn’t in the starting rotation,” Bohl said.

    Bohl said he wasn’t sure if both will return to NDSU for the fall semester. Chapman was suspended for the last week of spring football for academic reasons. . . .  (read more)
