Tribune Exclusive Report: A stadium takes shape

Rain has delayed the first phase, but all five of the Cal Poly home football games will be in stadium; dedication is set for Oct. 21

    By Brian Milne

"It's going to be a spectacular setting. The drawings don't do it justice as far as the scope of it. It's a big building. It's everything we've talked about, and it's going to make a big statement." -- Rich Ellerson, Cal Poly head football coach

Every morning that he comes to work and hikes up the rusty old stairway to his Jespersen Hall office, Cal Poly football coach Rich Ellerson sees the day-to-day progress of the Alex G. Spanos Stadium renovation project firsthand.

From the top of the stairs, Ellerson -- who has coached or played everywhere from the Orange Bowl to Ohio Stadium -- gazes over the transformation taking place on the west side of the stadium and is a bit taken back by what he sees.

"It's going to be a spectacular setting," he said. "The drawings don't do it justice as far as the scope of it. It's a big building. It's everything we've talked about and it's going to make a big statement."

Slowly but surely, Spanos Stadium (formerly Mustang Stadium) is taking shape.

School officials report the first phase has been delayed because of extensive rains earlier this year, but the stadium will still host all five of the Mustangs' home games this season.

The new-and-improved stadium --which will seat about 10,000 fans --will be fully unveiled at a dedication ceremony scheduled for Oct. 21 prior to Cal Poly's homecoming game against South Dakota State.  .  .  .  (read more)
