K-STATE FOOTBALL | Meyer making an impression
Wildcats uncover gem of a tackle in freshman
    Small-town find from Campbell, Neb.

MANHATTAN, Kan. | In a roundabout way, Derek Meyer can thank a former high school teammate for helping him find a niche at Kansas State.

Meyer, a redshirt freshman, earned glowing reviews all spring from Wildcats football coach Ron Prince. Now it looks as if Meyer has a superb shot at locking down the starting spot at left tackle when K-State opens Sept. 2 against Illinois State at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

“It would mean a lot,” Meyer said.

How Meyer got to this point is a story in itself.

While attending Silver Lake High School in Roseland, Neb., teammate Brandon Jacobitz’s family sent a tape of their son to South Dakota State in hopes of drawing recruiting interest, according to Meyer’s dad, Dana. Like Meyer, Jacobitz is an offensive lineman.

“We found out the coaches at South Dakota State said, ‘Who is that number 97?’ when they saw the video. That was Derek,” Dana Meyer said.

At the time, Jacobitz was a senior, Meyer a junior. That interest by South Dakota State signaled the Meyers that their son just might be a prospect himself, so they made the summer-camp circuit after Derek’s junior year. One stop included Olathe North High School, where K-State’s staff was holding an event.

Former Wildcats offensive line coach Bob Stanley and offensive coordinator Del Miller told the Meyers afterward they thought Derek had potential.

They weren’t lying. Meyer also was offered a scholarship his senior year by Wyoming and received some interest from Nebraska, but he never got an offer from the Huskers. He accepted the scholarship presented by K-State.

Jacobitz? He went on to play at Hastings College, an NAIA school in Nebraska.  .  .  .  (read more)

I guess the Wildcats need to send us a thank you.

    Go State!
