DAKOTA DUNES -- Bobby West is young and he has been in this position before.

The 18-year old from Watertown used a strong driver en route to firing a one-under par 71 Friday afternoon in the opening round of the South Dakota Men's Stroke Play Championship at Dakota Dunes Country Club. . . .

I was just driving the ball far and down the middle," said West, who has a one-stroke lead over Charlie Jacobson of Sioux Falls and Chris Knight of Aberdeen.

Defending champion Ryan Jansa of Sioux Falls is among four players at 73 heading into today's action. . . .

Jacobson found himself three-over par after the first six holes. The 24-year old, who's currently in military active duty for Homeland Security in Sioux Falls, birdied the seventh and eighth holes to get back in contention.

The South Dakota State University golfer made one of the tournament's key shots as he sunk a 25-foot putt, downhill, on the eighth hole. Then on the back nine, Jacobson birdied the 12th and 18th holes.

"I stayed patient most of the time and made a birdie on 18 to finish," said Jacobson. "You keep the ball in play, good shots are going to happen."

Jacobson has been a regular at the Stroke Play Championships for nearly eight years. Following his first year at SDSU, he entered the South Dakota National Guard for the first of six years of duty.

He's not able to tell much about his duties with Homeland because of obvious security reasons, outside of being stationed at a couple of Air Force bases in different parts of the United States. Still, he's able to play golf and hopes to return for his final season of eligibility with the Jackrabbits this fall. . . .

Good Luck Charlie and Go State! ;D

      Jansa captures stroke play

DAKOTA DUNES - "Stroke Play Champion" and "Ryan Jansa" are practically synonymous. But this year, as the Sioux Falls standout picked up his sixth title Sunday at Dakota Dunes, the situation was different.  .  .  .

Jansa used a solid start to get a three-shot lead on the front nine and maintained a two- to four-stroke buffer the rest of the way. He ended up Sunday with a two-strokes under 69. Brad Jacobson, who golfed for Texas Tech, shot 71 for second and Charlie Jacobson, an SDSU senior, came in third with 72.  .  .  .

As more college-age players take to the links, Jansa recognizes the game has changed since he captured his first title 11 year ago. . . .

Brad and Charlie Jacobson are two of those players.

"Every year you've got new kids getting better," Charlie Jacobson said.

Playing a seasoned victor wasn't intimidating to a tournament first-timer like himself, Charlie said.

"I wasn't nervous at all. (Jansa) makes you feel calm and is telling jokes," he said. "It's always fun to play with guys like that."

Jansa doesn't seem to mind. And he'll be back to defend his title next year.

"Amateur golf in South Dakota is just awesome, it keeps getting better," he said.

Nice job Charlie! You did the Jackrabbits proud.

      Go State!  ;D

Not that anybody cares, Brad Jacobson is a Hamlin grad and we Chargers are proud of his accomplishments. Too bad we didn't have a DI university to hold him in-state when he graduated. Now we do.

...and Charlie Jacobson is a Watertown native and played for the Arrows before matriculating to SDSU.

          Go Jacks.
