Mansheim breaks record set in 1984 in Ames

AMES, Iowa — South Dakota State's Becka Mansheim broke the longest standing record in South Dakota State indoor track and field history Saturday to lead the SDSU women’s track and field team in the 3,000-meters at the ISU Classic.

Mansheim, a senior from Brookings, posted a time of 9 minutes, 37.49 seconds, bettering the previous Jackrabbit record of 9:42.96 set by Kristin Asp in 1984. Mansheim placed second out of 77 competitors. Iowa State’s Lisa Cole won the event by recording an NCAA provisional time of 9 minutes, 33.69 seconds. Overall, Mansheim has now helped break or broken three indoor records this winter.

In the field events, Andrea Masters finished 23rd overall in the high jump clearing the bar at 5 feet, while sophomore Sara Ackman threw 42 feet to finish 37th in the shot put.

In other running events, Stacy Huss posted a season best in the 800-meter run. The Fort Pierre native ran 2:17.17 to finish 42nd overall. Finally, Danielle Burke crossed the finish line at 5:07.81 in the mile run. The freshman placed 33rd out 82 runners.

The Jackrabbits will travel to Fargo, N.D. for the Bison Classic on Feb. 16. Start time is set for noon in Fargo.
