Jackrabbits add two talented golfers to the team

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University has accepted two high school seniors, who intend to compete on the SDSU men’s golf team next fall. Lead-Deadwood High School senior Lance Collins and Dell Rapids St. Mary High School senior Matthew Erickson were both accepted for admission this week.

A six-time varsity letter winner and three-time South Dakota State Class ‘A’ Tournament qualifier, Lance Collins finished seventh, third and second at the state tournament over the last three years, and led the Golddiggers to the Class ‘A’ team title in 2006. Collins also garnered first-team all-state honors in 2005 and 2006. . . .

Already a winner of four of the five tournaments he played in this spring for the Cardinals, Matthew Erickson previously earned four varsity letters at Dell Rapids St. Mary High School and made the all-conference team in all four years. Erickson qualified for the South Dakota State Class ‘B’ Tournament in all of the last three years, finishing 16th in 2004 and runner-up in both 2005 and 2006, earning first-team Class ‘B’ all-state in final two years. . . . One of these future Jackrabbits didn't do anything to hurt his cause.  As an individual, Matt Erickson won the Class B Boys State HS tournament by 10 strokes yesterday.

And Dell Rapids St. Mary senior Matt Erickson could, finally, enjoy walking to the 18th green.
    ....
Erickson - twice a runner-up - took top individual honors at 3-over-par 147, besting Colman-Egan's Lance Relf by 10 strokes.
    ....
In the final round of his stellar prep career, Erickson was yet chasing his goal of a state championship, something that had twice eluded him by a single stroke.

The first-day bugaboo out of his way, the South Dakota State recruit followed a 74 with a 73, giving him the two low rounds of the tournament.

Considering the windy conditions, Hillcrest's small greens and his own history, Erickson couldn't have imagined winning so comfortably - and in a sense, he didn't.

"I still played with the mindset that even if I'm behind, play until the end," he said.
