    Versatile Winders anchors relay crew

By Steven Allspach - Journal sports writer

    Posted from 05/08/07:
If at first you don't succeed....

Twice this spring, Dan Winders has crossed the finish line first, believing he and his North teammates had won 4x400 relays.

Moments later either time, though, he was informed the Stars had been disqualified.

"Sure, it was a bummer, but there's nobody to blame," recalls The Journal's Metro Athlete of the Week. "It was a learning experience, but we've worked hard to smooth out our exchanges.

"We all get it now and we're trying harder. There's no room for mistakes. You learn from your mistakes."

Winders helped make up for the misfortune at the East Invitational and Sioux City Relays by anchoring the Stars to victories in the Missouri River Activities Conference 4x400 and the 4x200 at Olsen Stadium last week.

"Dan started the season out hot at the Le Mars Invitational and he's been consistently good, despite the bad weather, all spring," said Erv Whitehead, in his first season as North track coach. "It was a nice reward for the hard work of all the guys when we got the 4x200 record at the MRAC meet.

"Dan's been a big part of the success of that group. I feel we can run much faster, too, as we get smoother with the exchanges.

"And, winning the 4x400 without an incident was encouraging, too."

With Winders running the second leg, the Stars set an MRAC record with a 1:31.17 clocking in the 4x200 and he came back to run a 51-second anchor on the 4x400 crew that won in 3:30.97. . . .

The 18-year-old Winders' parents are Tim Winders and Nancy Fada. He has a younger brother, Timmy, and an older sister, Angie.

Dan plans to enroll at South Dakota State and compete in track there.

He was born in Sioux City, but the family moved to Brandon, S.D., when he was 4 and returned to Sioux City after his eighth-grade year.

One his friends growing up in Brandon and attending Brandon Valley schools, Dale Moss, had a great influence on his decision to enroll at South Dakota State.

"Dale is still one of my best friends and he's signed with SDSU for basketball," said the lean and long-striding 6-foot-2 Winders. "I think it's going to be a good fit for me and I'm looking forward to competing in track.

"It's a Division I program, so there will be a big challenge."

The 6-4 Moss was an all-stater in basketball and football at Brandon Valley this year and was the state's Gatorade player of the year in basketball. One of his teammates at SDSU will be Bishop Heelan's Clint Sargent, who has also signed with the Jacks. . . . (read more)

Spearfish track standout strides to SDSU team

By Gary Scott Groce, Special to the Pioneer

SPEARFISH - D.J. Thompson is quite a man. He is a fast man. Just this spring he won the 800m at the South Dakota State High School Track and Field meet, setting the state record with a time of 1:54.08, a mark set 12 years ago by Jake Maas of Rapid City Central High School.

Thompson nearly won the 400m too, but he stumbled around the last turn. He placed second with a time of 50.06.

Thompson is one of the fastest thinclads in the state.

However, Aaron Nida, Spearfish High School track coach, said he is going to be much faster.
Thompson's personal goals are shaving several seconds off the 400m putting him into the mid 40s, for the 800m, between 1:46, considered to be elite, and 1:48. These times would put him in the mix with the best NCAA runners.

Thompson first ran track in seventh grade. His mother, Kellye Thompson, had to learn through another that her son was winning most, if not all, of his events.
She said she couldn't believe it, as her son was a seemingly ungainly youth. Kellye said she had to see her son in action and has attended track meets ever since.

His father, Devan Thompson, was a Black Hills State University sprinter and football player. Thompson inherited more than speed and athleticism from Devan; just like his father he likes old-school hip-hop and has the Beastie Boys, House of Pain and Run-DMC in his music library.

In his first track season, Thompson discovered what he liked doing most; running. He has competed ever since.

Many colleges noticed his swiftness afoot, Nida said. Thompson ultimately chose South Dakota State University where legendary long-distance and former Olympian Rod DeHaven coaches. . . . (read more)
