NORSE OPEN SEASON WITH 78-65 WIN

Purdon, Kelsey lead NKU three-point shooting attack

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Mike Kelsey scored 19 points Friday night as Northern Kentucky University opened the season with a 78-65 win over Kennesaw (Ga.) State University at the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic.

Kelsey, an Elder High School graduate, made four three-pointers as NKU finished 12-of-23 from beyond the arc. NKU’s Steve Purdon finished with 16 points and also connected on four three-point shots.

NKU built a 37-27 halftime lead by shooting 50 percent from the field. The Norse led by as many as 19 points in the second half and coasted to the victory.

“It was a nice way to open our season, and we have a great three-point shooting team,” NKU head coach Ken Shields said. “We came out strong, and Steve Purdon’s shooting really set the tone early in the game.”

Purdon made a pair of three-pointers to open the game and give NKU a 6-2 lead. Kelsey added another three-pointer to extend the advantage to 9-2, and the Norse led the entire game.

Adam Howell came off the bench and added 10 points for NKU. Terrence Hill led Kennesaw State, which is ranked No. 22 in the Division II poll, with 19 points.

Kevin Reinhardt, a Campbell County High School graduate, finished with nine points for NKU. Sean Rowland added six points and seven assists for the Norse.

NKU will meet Philadelphia (Pa.) University at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the second round of the tournament. NKU won the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic three years ago.

Re: SDSU vs Northern Kentucky Univeristy

NKU lost a tight one to Philadelphia. We'll see how they bounce back against the Rabbits . . .

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Tayron Thomas scored 20 of his game-high 30 points in the second half Saturday night, and he made a pair of key free throws in the final minute as Philadelphia (Pa.) University posted an 81-78 win over Northern Kentucky University at the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic.

After Mike Kelsey finished off a conventional three-point play with 58 seconds remaining to cut Philadelphia’s lead to 77-76, Thomas was fouled and converted a pair of free throws to give the Rams a 79-76 advantage. NKU’s Jesse Rupe made a short jumper with 16 seconds left to cut the deficit to 79-78, and the Norse immediately fouled Brent Welton with 14.5 seconds on the clock.

Welton hit one of two free throws to extend Philadelphia’s lead to 80-78. NKU’s Steve Purdon missed a jumper with two seconds left, and the Rams’ Jim McMahon grabbed the rebound and was fouled.

McMahon made one of two free throws to give Philadelphia an 81-78 lead with 1.4 seconds left. NKU had a final shot, but Kelsey’s three-point attempt was partially blocked and Philadelphia (1-1) escaped with the victory.

“Philadelphia really shot the ball well, and they made a number of tough shots,” NKU head coach Ken Shields said. “The most important statistic in basketball is shooting percentage, and they made 53.8 percent of their shots. That’s exactly why they won this game.”

The Rams connected on 28 of 52 shots from the field, including 9-of-16 shooting from three-point range. Thomas, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard, made 9 of 14 from the field and hit all 10 of his free throw attempts.

Philadelphia led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but Rupe and Howell led a rally that sliced the deficit to 42-36 at the break. NKU eventually took a 70-69 lead on Howell’s three-pointer with 3:34 remaining, but Thomas countered by making four straight free throws to give the Rams a 73-70 advantage with 2:52 left.

Rupe led NKU (1-1) with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Howell added 18 points. Kelsey finished with 17 points for the Norse, who will conclude the Division II Tip-Off Classic at 3:30 p.m. Sunday against South Dakota State University.

Sean Rowland added 10 points and three assists for NKU, which won the rebounding battle by a 36-25 margin. Welton scored 16 points for Philadelphia, and Darnell Goudy and Brett Storm each added 11 points for the Rams.

I was able to attend the last game of the Disney Classic. Good contingent of Jacks fans as I would estimate 75ppl. The Jacks played very poorly in the first half with poor shot selection and terrible free throw shooting. Very bad officiating the entire game. I think the refs got a taste of how passionate Jack fans are about their team as the Jack faithful gave it to them pretty good. Jones was thrown out of the game for retaliating and throwing a punch. The post play in first half was non-existent. The guards Richardson and Moeller played well. Moeller has defenitely bulked up and is so strong. You will be surprised when you see the true freshman as they are strong, physical and play with poise. I believe Loney who they left at home will be the only freshman to redshirt. Schantz finished strong. We wore down a decent Northern Ky. team as our deep bench just overwelmed them in the second half. I dont believe Hokenson,Gass and Giever will see much playing time this year. This team is going to be everything I thought if we stay healthy! See you in Mankato!

Re: SDSU vs Northern Kentucky Univeristy

I was listening to the N. Kentucky feed occasionally, as well as the WNAX feed on the Internet. They were even more contemptuous of the refereeing as Steve Imming was--only natural as they not only were seeing bad refereeing but they were also being drilled by a superior team. They sounded completely depressed with about six minutes left in the game -- no energy at all in their radio call of the game.

Have to say that Steve Imming is a much, much, much better basketball radio guy than the pair on the NKU radio feed. He did a much better job of describing the action, and really did a pretty good job of calling it fairly...even when Jones got tossed from the game, he said it was because he was dumb and retaliated.

Coach Nagy on the post-game called the NKU player that Jones got caught up with "dirty" (quote-unquote) and that he'd talked with the refs about that player.

What do y'all think? Undefeated this year? I'm thinking 38-0 is actually possible this year. Isn't THAT scary?

I'm not predicting a undefeated season, but I honestly
believe we will give teams in the NCC matchup fits. #30 was a very dirty player and JOnes put him to the floor.

I kind of hope they redshirt all the freshman so we have them in DI. Hokenson, Gass and Giever were all good off the bench last year. It's good to know that the freshman can play though. Either way we will be a very deep team.

I was thinking the same thing until I saw in person the kind of rotation we have with Green,Beran and Wenig off the bench. I say why not go for it all and win a National Championship. I think Hokenson is a nice player
and Gass may give you a few minutes if we have foul trouble, but he just isn't big enough to bang inside and I won't even comment on Giever. Those 3 played well under the circumstances last year and we need them to provide competition in practice. I may be wrong and Nagy is simply seeing what they have before deciding who to redshirt in December.

Re: SDSU vs Northern Kentucky Univeristy

I'm thinking that the NDSU win over Montana pretty much shut up the D-I naysayers in North Dakota. Nothing less than a dominating men's basketball season culminating in a national championship by SDSU will shut up the South Dakota naysayers. (And there are of course those who wouldn't shut up even if we'd beat Duke . . . Go figure.)

I don't think the NCC has ever seen a team like the 2003-04 Jackrabbits. We're deep and huge inside, and we've got perimeter players who can shoot the 3. We've got all the elements to be a dominant team, the likes of which this conference has never seen (and with our move to D-I, will never see again).

An undefeated season probably isn't realistic (we're talking about 19-23 year olds, after all), but something like 35-3 and a national championship is certainly achievable, from what I've read and heard so far.

Regardless of how it all plays out, they're my Rabbits.

                          Let's get it on!
