  • Battle for 2nd in the NCC

    As you can tell I have a 2 day old at home, no sleep. Fortunately, I now have this forum to occupy my time. Here is the NCC wrap-up. As I have stated previously, I think there are 5 teams of equal caliber behind the Jacks (far behind). I would put them is this order at this time;
UNO, USD, Mankato, and NDSU/UND as a push. Here is the NCC wrap-up for Friday.

    Men's Basketball Wrapup: January 9
    1/9/04 23:05
A look at the men’s basketball games on January 9:

South Dakota State 92, South Dakota 79

Brookings, S.D. -- Third-ranked South Dakota State remained undefeated with a 92-79 victory over fifth-ranked South Dakota.

SDSU forward Derrick Schantz scored 21 of his game-high 26 points in the first half as Jacks scored the last seven points, including a tip-in and a three-pointer by Schantz, to lead 39-32 at the break.

The Jacks started the second half with back-to-back layups by Jared DeJong to take a 43-32 lead, and then fought off numerous comeback attempts by the Coyotes.

USD closed within two at 44-42 on a basket by Derek Paben but SDSU built the lead back up to ten, at 59-49 on a layup by Jared Gass.

A layup by Doug Hanson got the Coyotes within 63-57 with 9:48 left, then Joe Green countered with a three-pointer for the Jacks.

A layup by Turner Trofholz pulled USD within 73-66 at the 6:36 mark, but Marquise Richardson hit a three.

In short, every time the Coyotes got close, the Jacks countered.

Both teams shot over 60 per cent from the field in the second half when USD was 20-of-32, 62.5 per cent, and SDSU was 19-of-30, 63.3 per cent.

SDSU shot 51.5 per cent for the game, 34x66, including 14 three-point baskets. Schantz hit 5-of-6 three-point attempts while Andy Moeller had four and Green hit three.

SDSU was also 10-of-14 on free throw attempts, an area where the Coyotes struggled, going just 5 -for-15. USD shot 48.5 per cent from the field for the game, 33-of-68, after a 36 per cent first half (13x36).

Moeller added 18 points for the Jacks, led SDSU on the boards with seven, and also had seven assists. Richardson scored 13 points.

Tommie King led four Coyotes in double figures with 21 points while Trofholz had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Josh Mueller added 16 points and 11 assists and Paben scored 12.

    Nebraska-Omaha 74, Augustana 67

Sioux Falls, S.D. -- Nebraska-Omaha built a big lead, then had to fight off a torrid second half rally by Augustana before holding on to register a 74-67 victory over the Vikings

The Mavericks broke a tight game open with a 16-3 run at the end of the first half to take a 44-26 halftime lead and expanded the margin to as many as 22 points after intermission.

C.J. Martin’s layup gave UNO a 57-37 lead with 12 minutes left, but then the Mavs stalled. Augustana rattled off eight straight points and eventually pulled to within 59-52 with 6:32 left.

Augustana creeped back to within six, fueled by three-point shots by James Borom and Nick Olson. Olson’s layup with 23
seconds left melted UNO’s lead to 72-66. Maverick guard Ty Graham knocked down a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to stop the rally.

The Mavericks shot 52 percent from the field the first half and limited the Vikings to just nine field goals and 32 percent shooting.

After the break, UNO cooled to just 35 percent from the floor, while the Vikings shot 45 percent.

Randy Bland led four Mavs in double figures with 14 points. Graham added 12 and Dada and Levy Jones each scored 10 and added nine rebounds.

Justin VanMeeteren scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Augustana. Nick Olson added 12 points and Jon Wagner chipped in 10 points for the Vikings.

Minnesota State 73, North Dakota 62

Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota State used superb free throw shooting to overcome poor field goal shooting in downing North Dakota 73-62 at Bresnan Arena.

Minnesota State, who only mustered 36.7% shooting (22x60) from the field, was led by Joe Williams’ 19 points and seven rebounds. Jamel Staten finished with 17 points, including a 8 of 8 performance from the free throw line while Josh Ziemke had 10 points.

North Dakota was led by the 26 pints and nine rebounds of Evan Lindahl. Todd Rypkema had 13 points and Jade Jahner had 10 points.

Minnesota State hit 25 of 29 free throw attempts and only turned the ball over 11 times to 22 times for North Dakota. UND hit 47.9% (23x48) in the game.

North Dakota State 85, St. Cloud State 76

St. Cloud, Minn. -- North Dakota State used balanced scoring and rebounding to defeat St. Cloud State 85-76. St. Cloud State led at the half 42-40.

Adam Dobmeier led four NDSU players in double figure scoring with 14 points and was joined by Jack May with 12 points, CoCo Cofield with 11 points and Aaron Green with 10 points. The leading Bison rebounder was David Erbes with 10 boards.

St. Cloud State also used a balanced attack with five players in double figures led by the 19 points and five rebounds of Alex Carlson. Matt Siegle and Nate Miller each had 12 points and Steve Trull and Jason Allen each scored 10 points.

NDSU won the rebounding battle 38-29 while both teams shot well. NDSU finished 52.8 percent (34x65) from the field while St. Cloud State hit 32 of 63 shots from the floor (50.8 percent).
