First day of the national tourney and we haven't started a thread yet!?!?

All 5 SDSU wrestlers have finished their first round match and we went 2-3.

Cody Pack (157) and Seth Gross (141) win their first round matches.

Nate Rotert (197), Alex Kocer (149) and David Kocer (174) all lost and head to wrestle backs.

I'm pretty sure all will wrestle 1 more match today.

Good opening day for the Jackrabbits! 4 of 5 remain in contention and Cody Pack is in the quarterfinals. Complete story on GoJacks.

Pack qualified for the quarters for the first time and he may have caught a break. His opponent in the next round is #15 seed Chad Walsh of Rider (NJ). Don't get me wrong, Walsh is an excellent wrestler, but he upset the #2 seed - Thomas Gantt of NC State. Gantt had been undefeated going into that match. Gantt's had three really close matches all year. He had beat Walsh 6-4 (SV) at Midlands in the semifinals. In the Finals he beat Pack 4-2. He won the ACC Championships 3-1 over #8 seed Nick Brascetta of Virginia Tech 3-1.

Walsh has had a very good sophomore season, going 25-7. He is a returning qualifier to the championships and won one match last year.

You can follow the Championships on-line at TrackWrestling. The NCAA is advertising that you can watch the matches at WatchESPN. I haven't tried it yet, but it would be nice. Action resumes at 10:00 a.m. Friday.

Seth Gross won his opening match. David Kocer and Nate Rotert won a pair of matches in the consolation bracket. David Kocer's 2nd victory was dramatic. He was trailing 7-4 in the third period, when he scored a takedown and a near-fall to win in the last 25 seconds.

the watchespn app is really nice. Each mat has its own espn3 "channel so if you know when/what mat they are on you don't have to do a lot of searching. Plus wrestling Twitter will give updates on where they are wrestling.

After watching some of the competition yesterday, particularly the Heavyweights. I'd be curious if Nate would consider bumping up to HWT, he's huge for a 197lber. Kyle Snyder (Ohio State) & Nick Gwiazdowski from NC State are two lighter but athletic HWT's dominating the Division this year, grant it Snyder is a world champ freestyler most likely headed to Rio this summer and Gwizz is the 2x Defending champ, but Nate has a similar build to him. In some of Nate's loses it seems he struggles a bit vs. quicker 197lbers. We have a log jam of good wrestlers between 165-197 but are very weak at HWT. Curious if Snyder & Gwizz's success will make the Staff and Nate consider a move as Snyder did that this year.

Other than that great to see the guys compete hard! And love the ESPN3 coverage, solid app!

157 weight class is on ESPNU right now. Pack should be up next.

                    Re: NCAA Nationals

                    Appreciate the kudos, slosho!

Jacks season ended yesterday and that elusive All-American status continues. Both Seth Gross and Cody Pack lost by identical 10-3 scores in the wrestle-backs to finish one win shy of the All-American status. I'm sure Cody is disappointed as he qualified for nationals all four years and missed out on that chance. He still goes down as one of the all-time greats in Jackrabbit history. Thanks Cody for being a part of the resurgence of our wrestling program!!!

                    On a side note:

Fellow Big XII member Oklahoma State were runner-up to Penn State. Listed below are the team standing results for the Big XII.

                    123.0 Penn State
                    97.5 Oklahoma State (2nd)
                    35.0 Iowa State (12th)
                    33.5 Oklahoma (13th)
                    24.5 Wyoming (18th)
                    8.0 Utah Valley (38th)
                    7.5 SDSU (39th)
                    6.0 NDSU (44th)
                    4.0 West Virginia (47th)
                    1.5 Air Force (62nd)
                    -1.0 Northern Colorado (72nd)

That last score is correct and this is not smack. UNC's 197 lb. Trent Noon was given an unsportsmanlike conduct resulting in a negative team score.

One fun fact that I found was that #14 seed Bryce Meredith of Wyoming lost in the championship bout at 141 lbs to #1 seed Dean Heil of OKST, 3-2. Seth Gross wrestled well against both of these wrestlers this year. He lost by two points to both wrestlers during regular season conference duals. At the Big XII Championships, Gross beat Meredith 8-3 in the semis and lost to Heil 5-3 in the championship bout. SDSU is not that far from having a champion wrestler at the NCAA's.

While the results may not be what we wanted overall, this team had a very impressive season. Of note:

                    - We hosted some top notch matches in Frost Arena, including a 20-16 loss to Virginia Tech who ended up 4th at Nationals. In that match, VT won the last three matches to come from behind to beat the Jacks. Nate Rotert was upset in one of those three matches 3-2 or the Jacks would have beat them.

                    - We also had a close loss to national runner-up Oklahoma State 20-15, in Frost.

                    - We went 6-2 in the Big XII.

                    - We swept NDSU in both dual matchups.

                    - Finished 4th out of 10 teams at the Big XII Championships.

                    - Got a record 5 wrestlers qualified for nationals with at least 4 of them winning matches at the championships.

That match lived up to the billing! It also brings credence to the previous post from MNJack about having Rotert move up to Hwt. The two big boys were much more athletic than some of the past heavy weight champions from the Gophers. Brock Lesner was probably the most athletic of that bunch, but the bulk of them were technically sound big boys.

Not sure where else to put this but Jon reader is participating in the USA Olympic trials.

I follow flowrestling on Twitter and they linked their main page with semi finals results.

Found this: 86 FS: Austin Trotman, TMWC dec. Jon Reader, Sunkist 9-6

Thought others who are interested in wrestling might have missed it.

Edit: although they were showing semifinal matches that appears have been in prelims
