  • SDSU 3rd in M & W at Summit

Third place finishes for the Men and Women at the 2015 Summit League Championships. Link to results is below. NDSU won both divisions and USD was second in both divisions. Here's the real positive: we've already starting closing the gap and the SJAC was only opened this year. That's going to not only be a great recruiting tool, but finally the athletes have a great practice facility. Good things are happening!

SDSU's men won the 4 x 400 -- in the Summit League, you could depend on the winner of that event to be NDSU, USD or ORU. The Jacks men have arrived and the Jackrabbit women have made a strong announcement. The men won in 3:12.28, crossing the line ahead of NDSU's 3:12.53 and ORU's 3:13.95. That's an exciting race! SDSU's women finished third to NDSU (1) and USD (2).

A good track team has to have a stable of runners who are competitive at 400 meters (7 or 8 would be nice). You have to have sprinters who run the 400 well, your 800-meter specialists have to be able to drop down and blaze a 400. Great milers can usually run very good 400s (e.g. when Jim Ryun had the world record in the mile, he also ran on the Kansas mile relay team). A good track team runs the 4 x 400 very well. SDSU's men winning the Summit League 4 x 400 and the women's 3rd place finish in the 4 x 400 are the signs you look for in how strong the teams are getting.

I'm aware of some of the recruits SDSU is picking up in track and field. It's not going out on a limb to say that in a couple of years, you'll likely see Summit League titles in track & field. And that in an environment in which NDSU and USD will continue to be very strong teams with Oral Roberts being very competitive in many events.

Teams are limited on the number of athletes that can be entered. But, on a per-event basis, there is no limit. So, if a team has five very good shotputters, each capable of scoring points, they can enter five in that event. NDSU tends to have balanced teams so if the conference adopted a rule that put an entry limit in each event, NDSU would still do well although they are not as strong in some running events as they have been in the past.

The coach's job of planning for the conference meet is much more complicated than many fans realize. You have to analyze your team's strengths and guess what the other coaches may be doing. Entry limits can have a critical impact on how a meet turns out. Let's say a conference adopts a rule limiting a team to no more than three entrants in an event. That team may be required to leave home the fourth and fifth best performers in a specific event. A balanced team that can score in all events will likely win a meet that has limits on entrants in each event. An unbalanced team that is extremely strong in selected events, may win a meet when there are no limits to entrants in a particular event. When one team is dominant in a particular event, another team may leave home very good performers because they won't be able to break into the scoring that is dominated by another team.

How do our teams stack up in comparison with the other big three in terms of scholarships? For instance, schools like ORU and USD do not have the number of sports that SDSU has so they may be able to offer a few more scholarships. ORU does not have football and USD does not have baseball.

GopherHole: I'm not sure how we compare in the conference on scholarship for T&F. I think that info is compiled somewhere (not positive).
