  • Previous Recruiting Classes

I'm fired up to see a new class of recruits sign on the bottom line. It is always fun to see the potential on paper, but how they translate to contributors on the gridiron does not always pan out. I'm looking back at some previous classes and I will start with the memorable 2010 class.

    P - SD - Ethan Sawyer [6'2" 180] Brandon Valley - http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/recru...6season%3d2010

Wow, the staff hit a homerun with this class! Arguably the best QB and best RB of all time to wear Jackrabbit jerseys. Add to that one of the best WR (Jason Schneider) of all time, an all conference lineman in Trevor Gregor, and all conference kicker (Syrovatka) and most coaches would be thrilled! Other key contributors on the offense out of this class included O-line starters Nick Purcell, and Andrew Mueller. Dom Wright contributed primarily on special teams, but I think we all expected him to be a jewel at WR with his outstanding high school speed. On defense, Jack Sherlock, Zach Bowers, and Auston LeBlance all had good careers. Ethan Sawyer was solid as a rock punting for the Jacks for many years.

Di-Jon Starr was a miss. I really thought he'd be the stud find on defense. A few others did not contribute significantly on Saturdays, but you can't overlook the impact some players had during practice and camps. Not everybody has to be a star on Saturday's to contribute.

The 2010 class will go down in history as one of the all-time greats in school history!

    Re: Previous Recruiting Classes

I'm sure some of the players that we missed on who signed for other schools would have had very nice careers with the Jackrabbits. While some of them could have been very good for the team, we definitely got the players we wanted in the 2010 class.

Tom Farniok was the local kid who even exceeded expectations at Iowa State. 4-year starter for the Cyclones.
Christian Dudziak helped NDSU win 4 consecutive championships. He was originally recruited as a safety out of Omaha.
Tanner Miller had a very good career with the Hawkeyes. He was a free agent signee with the Packers, but I don't believe he played for them beyond preseason games this year.
Josh Kristoff had a very nice career for the Ohio Bobcats. He was among the team leaders in tackles as a safety for multiple years. Bright kid who finished grad school this year in mathematics.
Isaac Fruechte started a few games for the Gophers over three different seasons. He did have about 700 career yards as during his career.
R.J. McGill had a nice career for UND, with nearly 1,100 yards receiving over his career. He was also a key contributor as a returner. Injuries may have affected his ceiling with the Sioux or whatever they are called.
Jake Howe started at nose tackle for Illinois for two years, finished career with 22 tackles.
Matt Huene ended up as a backup lineman for Purdue after originally signing with Air Force.
Brendan Murphy bounced around from Air Force to a community college, and ended up walking on for Arizona. Played primarily on special teams and some as a reserve DB.

      Re: Previous Recruiting Classes

One last comment about recruiting. Could you imagine where we'd be with recruiting this year if we waited as long as we did back in 2009-2010? Our first commit of the 2010 class was Austin Sumner on Dec 13, 2009. If we waited that long this year, we'd be in big trouble.

It's tough to follow up on the 2010 class. 2011 had more recruits and walk-ons. So far it has produced a number of solid role players and is arguably better on defense than the contributors on offense.

TJ Lally burst on the scene from the get go and had the potential to become one of the all time greats at linebacker. Hasn't happened thus far, but there is no doubt he has been a star of this class. The same could be said for Cam Jones. He had the potential to be an all-time great TE. He fits the freak mold of today's elite TEs. Huge, athletic, and with his QB past - great on field knowledge. However, injuries have taken their toll. So far, it is turning out to be the DBs that are making this class. Two shutdown corners and a solid safety with the mix of Pickerel/Gentile. Kreutzfeldt could make this group special with his contributions as a walk-on. Bryan Burke was an excellent JUCO filler on the D-line and JR Plote is having a nice career up front too. Bryce Silvering along with Kreutfeldt prove that walk-ons are very valuable even if they don't become stars.

Overview - excellent DBs, a couple of potential stars that have had their careers mildly side tracked, and a number of solid linemen on both sides of the ball. Sprinkle in a few contributors at the skill positions and it turned out to be a solid class in the shadow of 2010's epic class.
