  • Wrestlers Wrestling for Conference Title

    http://www.gojacks.com/ViewArticle.d...CLID=209412068

All about SDSU/NDSU this weekend as the wrestlers take on NDSU for the WWC championship. I continue to be amazed at the progress Coach Bono has made with this program in less than two years at the helm. Gonna be tough to beat NDSU who is nationally ranked, but Bono has them wrestling great.

A team win would be awesome and a true upset. Good work Coach Bono. Why are the wrestling coaches often lightweights in physical size? They probably have the moves and know how to knock some big goon on their butt. Not picking on Goon. The term is convenient.

My awesome upset did not happen today. NDSU 32 SDSU 12 in the dual today:
      Copied the Results from GoJacks:

      North Dakota State 32 - SDSU 12
149: Tyler Diamond (NDSU) over Alex Kocer (SDSU) - Dec., 11-5 (3-0 NDSU)
157: Cody Pack (SDSU) fall over Tanner Carlisle (NDSU) - Pin, 2:07 (6-3 SDSU)
165: Steven Monk (NDSU) TF over Joe Brewster (SDSU) - Tech., 17-2 (8-6 NDSU)
174: Hayden Zillmer (NDSU) TF over John Nething II (SDSU) - Tech., 16-0 (13-6 NDSU)
184: Kurtis Julson (NDSU) MD over Brady Ayers (SDSU) - Maj., 13-3 (17-6 NDSU)
197: Tyler Lehmann (NDSU) fall over Trey Hable (SDSU) - Pin, 3:30 (23-6 NDSU)
285: Evan Knutson (NDSU) fall over J.J. Everard (SDSU) - 4:06 (29-6 NDSU)

It sucks that we lost, but who would have been wrestling for the dual conference crown this year? Bono and staff have really got the program trending upwards, and we haven't even tapped into our 6th ranked recruiting class from last year yet. The future is exciting!

The results were nearly as bad as the first dual, with one exception. In the 125 class Ben Gillette won today, whereas back in the prior dual, NDSU won this class, but there were different wrestlers for both institutions. Weber was wrestling for NDSU and Isaac Andrade for SDSU. Ben Gillette is a soph. from Redfield, and Andrade is a Fr. from Redlands Ca. I haven't followed the wrestling team that close but apparently Gillette move up into the line up. Otherwise our other two guys who won today also won on Nov 30th. that being Cory Pack, and Eric Orzoco. Trey Hable got pinned today, and Koser lost to Diamond but both won in Nov. So NDSU widened their margin of victory by one point. In Nov, the dual score was 13-30. Kind of half full-half empty glass situation. I agree next year the results could be much different. I like the idea that we wrestle NDSU twice.

I'm actually a more than half-full kind of guy when it comes to how we progressed despite taking a beating to NDSU with a conference title on the line. While both the Rabbits and the Bison had title hopes on the line with this match, the Bison have a heck of a team and were expected to win this. If we would have won this match, we would have tied the Cowboys of Wyoming for the conference championship, not the Bison! We headed into Fargo against a team with a huge chip on their shoulder and they had far more to prove than we did.

Two nights prior to this match, Wyoming upset NDSU to claim a share of the conference championship. Since they own the tie-breaker in the head-to-head meeting, they ultimately are the conference champions. This did not set well with the #19 ranked Bison and they took out their frustration on us.

“Everyone was upset after the Wyoming match,” Lehmann said. “We all knew we could wrestle better. We wanted to come out and prove that we could stick it to these guys (SDSU) and able to dominate a match.” This was the quote from the INFORUM. The Bison have a very good team and they had some incentive to prove they belonged where the rankings have them. They also have a team filled with upperclassmen who have had success. They also have one wrestler who should be an All-American as he is wranked #3 or #4 in three different polls.

We want to be where the Bison are right now and that is having the expectation of being conference champs and having wrestlers capable of attaining All-American status if not potential individual national champions. This Rabbit team has gone from a team that couldn't win a match against a conference team to having a 3-2 record in conference and the only team to beat the conference champions. We beat Wyoming who won the tie-breaker with the Bison. This has been an outstanding year! Now we need to get some wrestlers qualified for the national tournament. Next year we will be adding some very talented wrestlers to the varsity lineup, which, should make this team that much more of a threat to win the conference championship.

All good points, and I am certainly going to pay more attention to our wrestling team. I might even make it to some matches, next year. It will be interesting to see how some of red shirt class preforms next year. I had a glimmer of hope when we upset Wyoming and Wyoming upset NDSU. Some of these guys are going to be hard to beat next year, especially the heavier weight classes.
