I sat in front of him at home football games for a number of years. A real enthusistic man. His son in law was not a fan of Coach Haensel's play calling as I recall. The son in law turned my head more than once, but President Wagner just kind of bit his tongue.
I never got to take his marriage class, as he came after I left. Maybe that is why I am still single.
I think he did a real great job as President and the Mitchell Republic article has it rightm when it said that he concentrated on internal affairs and not external affairs. I think he learned from his predecessor Hoops, that taking on the Governor had its drawbacks.Comment

He still makes me smile, even after learning of his death. I was fortunate to take his marriage class before he became an administrator. I remember how much fun he could make out of an ordinary class. The ironic thing is that I sat behind a beautiful brunette in his class and I never really took notice much because his class was so interesting. That brunette is now my wife, and we still laugh that we were more interested in his marriage class than who we were sitting by. We figured out we sat near each other because of the friends that we attended the class with knew each other.Comment

I took the Marriage class...must have been about fall of 73 or spring of 74. It was a sociology class and was very well done. I think students in those days would have ranked it one of the best classes on campus. It was taught in Rotunda D at night because of the high demand.
I still will quote a statistic or two that I heard from Dr. Wagner. And I remember everyone joking after exams, If I get a D or F in this class, what does that mean? Bad marriage prospects?
I first met Dr. Wagner when he was an Episcopal Priest in Watertown.

My four housemates rented a Caddy and raced to the Black Hills for skiing over Presidents' Day weekend in 1990. They stumbled (probably literally) upon President Wagner in a Deadwood casino and had their picture taken with him in front of a slot machine. My favorite Wagner memory.Comment

I ran into Dr. Wagner in Rapid City a couple of years ago. I told him that I had taken his marriage class and had currently been married for 26 years. I asked if that was long enough for an A in the course. He suggested that the answer was not yet.Finding is never about seeking.
