  • Career Approximate Value

pro-football-reference.com has a list of every player that has ever played in the NFL and you can break it down by college.

People might already be aware of that, but what I found interesting was that they now assign a rank (0-100) on how much impact the player made in the NFL. For fun I put together this list of players from the four main Dakota schools (UND, NDSU, SDSU, & USD) that had a rank of at least 20.

    C Jim Langer - 70-81 - SDSU - 82
    DE Ordell Braase - 57-68 - USD - 75
    TE Pete Retzlaf - 56-66 - SDSU - 71
    LB Steve Nelson - 74-87 - NDSU - 70
    G Adam Timmerman - 95-06 - SDSU - 65
    DE Phil Hansen - 91-01 - NDSU - 63
    LB Jim LeClair - 72-83 - UND - 60
    DB Tyrone Braxton - 87-99 - NDSU - 53
    RB Dave Osborn - 65-76 - UND - 37
    TE Jim Kleinsasser - 99-10 - UND - 29
    DB John Sanders - 74-78 - USD - 28
    DB Phil Wise - 71-79 - USD - 27
    LB Doug Eggers - 54-58 - SDSU - 26
    DB Wayne Rassmussen - 64-72 - SDSU - 21
    TE Steve Heiden - 99-09 - SDSU 21
    OL Lynn Boden - 75-79 - SDSU 20

For some reason Vinatieri has a 0 rank and I'm not sure why. I would guess that their rating system doesn't factor in kickers, because he obviously would be within the top3 on this list.

Here's a blog detailing how they came up with the number, i didn't have time to really read through it.

Only one Hall of Fame player from the old North Central Conference and he's a Jackrabbit: Jim Langer.
